Sometimes behind the scenes is more interesting than the finished product. This was true at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival 2014. I captured the backstage action as the L’Oréal Professionnel Team transformed 17 models before for each runway show.

White Night Melbourne 2014 – Photo Essay

White Night Melbourne

White Night Melbourne

Melbourne welcomed White Night for the second year with an expanded program. This time, word of mouth got around to approximately 500,000 people, seeing the streets of Melbourne packed to the brim for arts and culture in the wee hours of the morning.

I worked my way from north to south to capture the night, shooting for nine hours.
This is what I saw.

9pm – Lisa Mitchell live, QV

While not an official White Night event, as darkness fell, Lisa Mitchell started the evening with a delightful outdoor performance set in front of Luma Domes light installation by Kit Webster and Pierre Proske in QV Square.

11pm – Purple Rain, Old Melbourne Gaol

Purple Rain

A little moment in Purple Rain

The one hour wait was worth it. A visual and audio experience created by French artist Pierre Ardouvin, visitors were handed umbrellas and showered with illuminated rain, as Prince’s Purple Rain played.

12am – Melbourne, Music & Me Exhibition, RMIT

Melbourne, Music & Me

The Melbourne, Music & Me Exhibition put on an all-nighter for its final night. Showcasing the history of Australian music, affiliated with Mushroom Group of Companies, featuring tour memorabilia, awards and costumes of Kylie Minogue, Skyhooks, Crowded House, P!nk and Madonna.

1am – Vortex, Southbank Pedestrian Bridge

The bridge was transformed into a sci-fi visual experience. To be honest, it didn’t quite live up to the itinerary.

2am – Melbourne Now, NGV

The NGV was still buzzing in the early hours of the morning, with Melbourne Now and Edward Steichen & Art Deco Fashion were open all night, free of charge. The highlight – Darren Sylvester’s ‘For You’ disco room installation in the Melbourne Now exhibition.

4am – Midden, Birrarung Marr

Open House Melbourne 2013 – Photos

St Michael's Uniting Church

St Michael’s Uniting Church

Open House Melbourne, now in its sixth year was bigger than ever – more than 100 buildings opened the doors to the public. For the fourth year, I headed down to OHM to photograph the marvelous Hotel Windsor (Melbourne’s oldest purpose-built hotel, still in operation), St Michael’s Uniting Church and the Rialto building. Once again, the day was an absolute delight, the volunteer guides were knowledgeable and the day provided a rare insight into Melbourne’s hidden architectural gems.

White Night Melbourne

Laser lights of the Yarra River

White Night Melbourne is welcome addition to Melbourne’s arts calendar. Originating in Paris, the event saw the city is transformed into an all-night light show, with an estimated 300,000 people attending. While the crowds were overwhelming, there was plenty of entertainment throughout the night. I had a lot capturing the lights.
