Florence + The Machine – Melbourne

Florence + The Machine

Florence Welch onstage at Rod Laver Arena

I first photographed Florence + The Machine during her 2010 Australian tour as an emerging artist in 2010. In 2012, she returned a supernova. Selling out her Rod Laver Arena show in Melbourne, I photographed the show for Life Music Media.

MUTEMATH – Melbourne Photos!

The keyboard headstand

MUTEMATH played their first ever (sold out) Melbourne show at The Corner Hotel. With a 26 song setlist including Odd Soul and Spotlight, the two-hour high energy show with air mattress surfing and keyboard headstands, punters and photographers alike were left satisfied.

Kookai A/W 2012 Runway

A/W Runway

To launch Kookai’s A/W 2012 collection, Hotel Particulier Somewhere in Paris, Melbourne fashionistas came out in force for a preview of the new range, whilst sipping french Laurent Perrier champagne on the roof top of Luminare, South Melbourne.

I captured all the action from the party and runway, photos on flickr and Style Melbourne.

Evanescence & Blaqk Audio – Photos

Amy Lee – Rod Laver Arena

Corseted goths and pleather-clad kids came out of the woodwork to see Evanescence at Rod Laver Arena last night. Evanescence returned to Australia for an arena tour after a five year hiatus. Lead vocalist Amy Lee put on an energetic show, with her commanding vocals and the band’s lush orchestral arrangements. Bring Me To Life ended their main set on high, but it was the hauntingly beautiful acoustic rendition of My Immortal that brought the house down. Check out my Evanescence & Blaqk Audio (Davey Havok) gallery on Life Music Media and in my portfolio.

Kylie Minogue Anti Tour – Photos!

Kylie at The Palace

Kylie – Anti Tour, Melbourne

Kylie debuted her Anti Tour at Melbourne’s The Palace Theatre on Sunday night. With no backing dancers or elaborate sets and dressed down in a Vivienne Westwood Marilyn tee and Dolce & Gabbana denim shorts – Kylie could’ve been any singer and her band, except not many mid-level bands can sell 2,000 tickets within minutes. Such was the fever-pitch, that to ensure a good position, we had to hang about The Palace all day – and so I bring you these photos!

My highlight was when she embarked on the Impossible Princess-era tracks; Drunk and Say Hey – turning The Palace into a rave! And ‘the money shot’ – that was taken during Disco Down!

Seeing Kylie (for the first time) in such an intimate setting with a super fan, it’s a show I’ll remember for a long time. Kylie closed the show with the title track of her 1989 album Enjoy Yourself sporting original 1989 tour merchandise. Kylie proved that she can captivate the audience without any of her hits, bells or whistles.

Bush, Staind & Cherri Bomb – Soundwave Photos

Bush @ Palace Theatre

Bush @ Palace Theatre

Thursday night at The Palace Theatre, I got my hard rock face on to shoot the Bush Soundwave sideshow, supported by Staind & Cherri Bomb. In a high-energy show, frontman Gavin Rossdale and co played as if they were never gone. A pleasure to photograph! A highlight was when he ran to the upper standing areas to mingle with the crowd without missing a single word.

Feist live in Melbourne – Photos!

Feist @ The Palais

Feist @ The Palais

This year’s Laneway festival brought another of my favourite singer-songwriters downunder, Feist. The Canadian artist broke into the world’s consciousness thanks to her critically-acclaimed album The Reminder and that song featured in the Apple iPod Nano ad in 2007.

Playing a sideshow at the St Kilda gem, The Palais Theatre, Feist’s set-list was dominated by new tracks, with only a few token songs from The Reminder (and the noticeably absent 1234).

Big Day Out 2012 – Melbourne Highlights

Big Day Out 2012

Big Day Out 2012 - Melbourne

Big Day Out. The annual pilgrimage the northern hemisphere-residing bands want to make. Celebrating its 20th year, BDO’s Melbourne event lived up to my expectations; a dizzying day of racing between stages in the heat, expensive festival food and a corroboree of boho-dressed girls and board short-sporting guys.
Believe it or not, this was my first BDO – a musical coming-of-age for me, albeit 10 years too late. I was there shooting for Life Music Media!

Here are some of my highlights from Big Day Out – Melbourne:
Soundgarden   The Living End   Kimbra
From left: My Chemical Romance, The Living End and Kimbra.

Soundgarden – Orange Stage
The REAL headliner of the Big Day Out came in the form of veteran grunge Gods from Seattle, Soundgarden. That is all.

The Living End – Blue Stage
On the main stage, Chris Cheney never fails to deliver, effortlessly keeping the energy levels up. Playing a set list of 90s classics and throwing a few spanners in the works, The Living End should have a standing date at BDO for years to come.

Kimbra – Converse Green Stage
Kimbra brought a welcome relief of estrogen to the Big Day Out – it seemed that every photographer was there to cover her set. Her incredibly strong pipes, crazy Rio-inspired outfit and captivating presence, had both the audience and photographers thrilled.

Cage The Elephant – Essential Stage
Now and then there’s a pretty great discovery. After tearing up Coachella festival, Cage The Elephant played their first Big Day Out like they meant it. Lead singer Matt Shultz was a photographers dream, providing the only crowd surf moment of the day.
