Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival coloured the town stylish once again, on an uncharacteristically warm week in Melbourne.

On the new site, at the charming heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building. Old world charm comes at a price – no air-conditioning, so some of the Autumn/Winter styling had to be altered to suit the rising temperature.

I covered the runway action, for the seventh consecutive year. Here are some of my highlights from Runway 2 and 3. Full gallery on Flickr.

PDX hood life. Models: Brian, Greg & Steven

In Portland, I collaborated with local Instagrammer Steven Bustrin on a Vigilante web series. During October, Steven posted an ongoing saga of the tales of a disengaged young man in the big city, accompanied by a photograph, several of which were by me. Fun times re-imagining Portland as a city full of hoodlums.

Gallery below. View them larger on Flickr.

From the streets

Portrait from the streets of Portland

Portrait from the streets of Portland

There are around 4,000 people sleeping rough on the streets in Portland. The homeless situation in the USA is always a culture shock for me. I even saw 2x police officers issuing a ticket to a man sleeping in a car park, what an outrage! I’m not sure what the solution is, but what I learned is the best thing I could do was to overcome my fear and treat everyone with kindness and respect.

Over the second quarter, I had the pleasure of taking the creative reigns of UNIQLO Australia’s e-marketing. With a striking, globally recognised brand identity, it was a lot of fun giving the company an Australian-spin on their digital campaign roll-out.

The bi-annual UNIQLO collaboration with French fashion designer, Ines De La Fressange was launched globally in January. Below is one of two of the e-newsletters I designed and wrote copy for this campaign. The pretty & layered look and feel gave me the chance to portray UNIQLO in a different way.

As we head into the cooler months, the designer showings keep coming. Last week, Melbourne’s historic jewellery boutique, Kozminsky was re-imagined as a Parisian salon for the Kara Baker A/W 2015 Runway show. I captured the action for Kara Baker, check out the gallery below.

Miss Vogue runway finale

Miss Vogue runway finale

The highlight of every Melbourne fashionista’s calendar, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, arrived at the Docklands precinct once again. I covered the runway action, for the 6th consecutive year (I am becoming quite the veteran)! Maybe the influence of Virgin is responsible for the increasingly international presence, this year saw a few labels with roots in US and France.

Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibition at the NGV

Virgins Collection - Jean Paul Gaultier

Virgins Collection

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk was the National Gallery of Victoria’s blockbuster exhibition of Summer 14/15. Marking Gaultier’s retirement in ready-to-wear fashion, touring the fashion capitals of the world, from New York to London, having drawn over a million visitors, we need not ask ‘Is fashion art?’ – Melbournians, they get it.

This was not your ordinary retrospective exhibition. Chronicling the L’Enfant Terrible designer’s career spanning 40 years, extravagantly displayed in thematic rooms, from the high end punk aesthetic he helped champion onto the runways of Paris, to the non-conforming perceptions on sex and gender and the iconic collaborations with pop icons Madonna and Kylie Minogue. The mannequins brought ‘life’ to the space, with disconcerting animated faces, some even talking, including one of Gaultier himself who welcomes you in his jovial manner.

For my fellow Madonna fans, the exhibition did not disappoint. Gaultier’s career is intrinsic to Madonna’s, both visionaries iconoclastically challenging the boundaries of gender, collaboratively and independently, including the infamous Blonde Ambition tour conical bra costume in 1990 and again deconstructed for the MDNA world tour in 2013.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk was a truly inspiring exhibition for fashionistas and pop culture aficionados alike. The exhibition is now on it’s way to Paris.

Here are some of my photographic highlights of the exhibition, visit my Flickr gallery to see more.

The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier

Silhouettes of femininity and masculinity, contrasting embellished silk with bold stripes, brought to life by animated faces, show just what a fine couturier Jean Paul Gaultier is.

The Boudoir

A post-modern deconstruction on gender nonconformity and androgyny, most iconicly communicated through Gaultier’s collaborations with Madonna in her Blonde Ambition World Tour (1990) and architecturally deconstructed for her MDNA World Tour (2012).

Punk & Cancan

The rawness of the British punk movement meets unabashed Parisienne drama is Gaultier’s signature ready-to-wear look.

From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk at the NGV demonstrated Gaultier’s connection with Australia, through various costumes for Kylie Minogue and launching trans-gender model Andrej Pejić’s career. A fitting end to a triumphant exhibition.

Beach Maternity Photoshoot

Maternity goes tribal

My first maternity shoot was with one of the most gorgeous mum-to-be! At 36 weeks, Tate rocked our beach-themed pregnancy photoshoot, along Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne.

Shot at sunset, I went for a glam, fun and down-to-earth vibe, which is exactly who Tate is. With some fabulous clothes from Jeanswest, I styled the wardrobe with fashion-forward pieces which have a tribal edge, yet not explicitly ‘maternity wear’. Check out the series below.
